Sugar Free Coconut Ladoo Recipe | Nariyal Laddu for Diabetics

You Do Not Have to Give Up Sweets Because of Diabetes

Coconut ladoo is one of those sweets that shows up at every celebration. Soft, white, rolled in coconut, and gone from the plate in minutes. For anyone with diabetes, though, it is usually a no, because almost every coconut ladoo recipe depends on sugar, condensed milk or jaggery to hold it together.

Here is the thing. You do not need to sacrifice taste because of diabetes, you just need better options. This nariyal laddu recipe uses only five ingredients: coconut powder, a teaspoon of ghee, milk, Diabexy Sugar Free Sweetener and a little grated coconut for rolling. No sugar, no condensed milk, no jaggery. It takes about 20 minutes, and the whole family can eat it together.

Why Most Coconut Ladoo Recipes Spike Blood Sugar

If you look at the top coconut laddu recipes online, they almost always come in three versions: one with sugar and milk, one with condensed milk, and one with jaggery. Some recipes use nearly as much sugar as coconut. All three versions push a lot of sugar into your blood very quickly.

Popular Version Why It Does Not Work for Diabetics
Coconut ladoo with condensed milk Condensed milk is mostly sugar
Coconut ladoo with jaggery Jaggery raises blood sugar almost like sugar
Coconut ladoo with sugar and milk Many recipes use as much sugar as coconut
Coconut ladoo with dates or honey Natural sugar, still a high glucose load
Coconut ladoo with zero GI sweetener Sweet taste without the sugar spike

People often search for coconut laddu with jaggery thinking it is the healthy version. For a diabetic, jaggery is still sugar. The only real fix is to use a sweetener that does not raise blood sugar at all.

Typical Coconut Ladoo vs Sugar Free Coconut Ladoo

Typical Coconut Ladoo Diabexy Sugar Free Coconut Ladoo
Sweetener Sugar, condensed milk or jaggery Diabexy Sugar Free Sweetener
Added sugar Very high Zero
Ingredients Often 5 to 8 Just 5
Blood sugar impact Sharp spike Much gentler
Diabetic friendly No Yes, in a sensible portion

Coconut itself is naturally rich in fibre and healthy fats and low in digestible carbohydrate. Once the sugar is removed, a coconut ladoo becomes a much kinder sweet for blood sugar, as long as you keep the portion sensible.

Ingredients for Sugar Free Coconut Ladoo

This is a desiccated coconut ladoo recipe, so you can use ready coconut powder from the market. No need to break and grate a fresh coconut.

Ingredient Quantity
Coconut powder (desiccated coconut) 100 g (about 1 cup)
Desi ghee 1 tsp
Milk 1 cup
Diabexy Sugar Free Sweetener 1 tsp
Grated coconut, for rolling 50 g
Diabexy Sugar Free Sweetener

The only sweetener in these ladoos. Zero glycemic index, so it adds sweetness without raising blood sugar. Blends easily into hot milk and works for laddus, barfi, halwa, kheer and chai.

How to Make Sugar Free Coconut Ladoo: Step by Step

Here is exactly how to make nariyal ladoo without sugar. Keep the flame low the whole time, coconut burns quickly.

Step 1: Heat ghee in a pan

Heat a pan on low flame and add one teaspoon of desi ghee. Let it melt and coat the base of the pan.

Step 2: Add the coconut powder

Add one cup, about 100 grams, of coconut powder and mix it well with the ghee. Roast it gently for a minute or two. You only want it to smell nutty, so do not let it turn brown.

Step 3: Pour in the milk

Add one cup of milk and stir. The coconut soaks up the milk and turns soft and moist.

Step 4: Add Diabexy Sugar Free Sweetener

Add one teaspoon of Diabexy Sugar Free Sweetener and mix well. Keep cooking on low flame, stirring often, until the milk dries up and the mixture thickens and starts to come together. Taste and adjust the sweetness if you like.

Step 5: Transfer to a bowl

Switch off the flame and move the mixture into a bowl. Let it cool just enough to handle. It should still be warm, because warm mixture shapes best.

Step 6: Shape into round balls

Grease your palms lightly with ghee. Take a small portion of the mixture and press and roll it into a smooth, round ladoo.

Step 7: Roll in grated coconut

Spread 50 grams of grated coconut on a plate and roll each ladoo in it until it is evenly coated. This gives the classic white, snowy look.

Step 8: Serve or store

Your sugar free coconut ladoos are ready to serve. Store any extra in an airtight container in the fridge.

Is Coconut Laddu Good for Health?

A common question is is coconut laddu good for health. The traditional version, made with sugar or condensed milk, is more of an occasional treat. The coconut itself is a good ingredient: it brings fibre and healthy fats that keep you satisfied with a small portion. Remove the sugar, as in this recipe, and the ladoo becomes a far better choice, especially for people watching their blood sugar.

Tips for Perfect Coconut Ladoos

  • Roast on low flame only: Brown coconut tastes bitter and loses its white colour.
  • Cook until the milk dries: Wet mixture makes soggy ladoos that will not hold their shape.
  • Shape while warm: Cold mixture cracks and crumbles.
  • Grease your palms: A little ghee stops the mixture sticking to your hands.
  • Want variety? Add a pinch of cardamom or a few chopped pistachios or almonds. Skip raisins, they add sugar.
  • Keep portions small: One or two ladoos is a sensible serving. Coconut is still calorie dense.

Frequently Asked Questions

Diabetics can eat coconut ladoo when it is made without sugar, condensed milk or jaggery. This recipe uses coconut powder, a little ghee, milk and Diabexy Sugar Free Sweetener, which has zero glycemic index. Keep the portion to one or two ladoos and have them after a meal rather than on an empty stomach.

Heat one teaspoon of ghee, add 100 grams of coconut powder and roast lightly. Add one cup of milk and one teaspoon of Diabexy Sugar Free Sweetener and cook on low flame until the mixture thickens. Transfer to a bowl, shape into balls while warm and roll them in 50 grams of grated coconut.

Yes. This recipe uses regular milk instead of condensed milk. Cooking the coconut in milk until it thickens gives a soft, binding mixture without the heavy sugar load of condensed milk.

No. Jaggery is often seen as a healthy sweetener, but it is mostly sucrose and raises blood sugar almost like regular sugar. For a diabetic friendly coconut ladoo, use a zero glycemic sweetener like Diabexy Sugar Free Sweetener instead.

Usually because the mixture was not cooked long enough or it cooled down too much. Cook until the milk dries up and the mixture comes together, then shape the ladoos while it is still warm. Greasing your palms with a little ghee also helps.

Because they are made with milk, store them in an airtight container in the fridge, where they stay fresh for about 3 to 4 days. Bring them to room temperature for a few minutes before serving for the best texture.

Yes. Fresh grated coconut works well and gives a softer ladoo. Since fresh coconut already has moisture, reduce the milk slightly and cook a little longer until the mixture thickens.
